Should I try hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy with Movement Beyond is perfect for you if you're ready to create change in your life - shed what's not working. You’re open to possibilities, interested in new perspectives, and ready to show up in your life where previously you have not be able to. You’re eager to gain insight, excited to pull back the veil a bit and brave enough to put yourself first.
This may not be the best option for you if you’re unwilling to let go of the “this is why everything sucks” narrative. Everyone and everything around you is driving you mad, and you wish they'd just change already! Just snap your fingers, blink your eyes, and a new life appears. Not gonna happen.
What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a heightened state of relaxation in which you are more open to suggestions. In hypnotherapy, those suggestions are previously discussed and agreed upon so the experience provides an opportunity for you to address whatever has prompted you to set an appointment.
What’s so great about hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is amazing: it works quickly, the wisdom comes from within, and those insights can be quite surprising. It’s estimated that 90%-95% of our lives are lived through the subconscious mind; hypnotherapy provides an opportunity to bring those subconscious ideas, experiences, and programs to light so you’re operating less on auto-pilot and more with intention.
What's the difference between the conscious and the subconscious? Consciousness is the part of you that is fully aware of itself; it communicates to the outside world who you are and what's going on with you - through speech, writing, thought and physical movement. The subconscious holds your experiences, traumas, beliefs, learned behaviors, memories and habits. It communications through emotions, feelings, imagination and dreams.
Here's a simple example of the difference between the conscious and subconscious:
In preparing for a night's rest, you've closed all the windows, locked the doors, turned off lights and climbed into bed. A normal routine on a normal night, but after a while, you think you hear a sound. Consciously, you know that you're safe at home, you're alone, and its impossible that you're threaten by this sound. The conscious mind says, "Oh that was a little weird, but I'm safe; it's just Fluffy playing with his toy." Subconsciously, your imagination begins to run wild with the fear of what this sound represents and what it will do to you. The subconscious mind begins to unravel: "OMG....this is gonna happen, then that's gonna happen...and then and then and then." The consciousness knows you've checked the locks and are safe, but the subconscious reflects how you feel: and if you hold any memories of being unsafe (in this life or a past life), bumps in the night will certainly trigger that feeling of fear.
What is a trance? Trance is an unordinary state of relaxation. Trances can happen spontaneously like when you're driving on a familiar road and your mind begins to wander; 20 minutes later, you're home and have no recollection of the actual drive. You just kinda checked out and guided yourself home without much effort. With a hypnotherapy trance, there's an intention to address something specific, perhaps something you'd like to change or have more insight about. It may feel similar to meditation: you're so relaxed that you can tap into parts of yourself that are not as loud as the voices inside your head. These deep inner resources can provide guidance or explain things that your conscious mind doesn't have access to.
Will you have control over me? All hypnosis is self hypnosis, so I will never have control over you. If you, even subconsciously, do not want to go into a trance state, you will not. You are always in control of the session. If you’re driving the car, I (as the hypnotherapist) am paving the road beneath the tires, providing a stable foundation. I’m keeping up with you.
What about those people who cluck like a chicken on stage? Isn’t that hypnosis? Stage hypnosis is for entertainment only, if you find that enjoyable. Even an experienced stage hypnotist cannot make you do anything that you do not want to do, even subconsciously. Hypnotherapy is using the process of hypnosis (extreme relaxation + suggestions) for self-healing and growth.
Is if safe? What if there’s an emergency? Yes, hypnotherapy is very safe. A hypnotic trance is simply an extraordinary relaxed state, so in the event of an emergency, this would be no different than snapping out of a daydream.
What if I see or find out something that I didn’t want to? This is unlikely, as you are guiding yourself through the session, providing wisdom for yourself through your own subconscious. But I will have previously taken note of any triggers that you may have, and will follow you closely.
Will I remember the session? Yes, you will remember the session, but I suggest writing about it afterwards (if journaling is not already a part of your daily rituals). The insights gained in trance can be powerful and sometimes overwhelming, so writing provides an opportunity for you to recall the session while it’s fresh and reflect on the experience.
I never feel relaxed. What if I can’t go into trance? We’ll take as much time as you need in the relaxation process, but there are also other techniques that do not require a trance state in order to be effective.
Is the session private? Yes, our session together is private, whether in person or over Skype. You’ll sign a confidentiality agreement that I honor unless you provide written consent for me to share our appointments with a designated person or organization (like your medical professional).
